Jessie's Key Lime Pie

The original was from Mary Relyea's in Taste of Home. However it was a bit bland for our tastes and I modified the sausage.

6 ounces uncooked whole wheat spaghetti
3/4 pound Italian turkey sausage links, casings removed or 1 pound Gimme Lean Sausage formed into meatball shapes
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 sweet onion, thinly sliced
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced
1/2 cup half-and-half cream
Shaved Parmesan cheese, optional
Mrs Dash Tomato Seasoning mix
Mrs. Dash Onion and Herb mix or Garlic and Herb Mix

Directions:
Cook spaghetti according to package directions.

IF USING REAL MEAT: in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook sausage in oil for 5 minutes. IF YOU ARE USING GIMME LEAN DO NOT DO THIS. Why? The gimme lean will not add the flavor of the sausage because there is no fat to cook out and add the flavor. The flavor comes from sausage grease. Instead add a hint of liquid smoke. A couple drops should do it.

If using the real sausage add onion; cook 8-10 minutes longer or until meat is no longer pink and onion is tender. If not use the onion as your first step then cook until translucent and tender.

Stir in tomatoes and basil; heat through. If using gimme lean add it with the tomato and the basil. Add cream; bring to a boil. Drain spaghetti; toss with sausage mixture. Garnish with Parmesan cheese if desired. Yield: 5 servings.
